Description:
The primary purpose of this project is to reduce the risk of flooding within the Opimihaw Creek that may result in subsequent damage to park infrastructure, specifically Wanuskewin-s Nature Trails and associated bridges. Due to a significant population of beavers within Wanuskewin-s owned section of the Opimihaw Creek and the formation of numerous beaver dams, the associated rise in average water levels has resulted in significant concerns regarding potential flooding risk. Additionally, to prevent flooding risk, Wanuskewin staff are required to physical dismantle existing dams, resulting in significant time and resource investments alongside potential risks to employee safety. To rectify this existing risk to park infrastructure and staff, Wanuskewin is seeking proposals for installation of drainage structures (commonly known as “pond-levelers”) that can support the drainage throughout the Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Pond leveler designs are required to be: i. Simple to maintain, ii. Simple to remove/repair with minimal additional tools, iii. Support either active or passive drainage, and iv. Designed to result in minimal disturbances to local environments, flora and fauna Due to the presence of multiple beaver dams, a minimum of three (3) pond levelers are required to in specific locations with significant concern/significant risk of infrastructural damage, with up to four (4) additional and optional levelers to be installed within Beaver dams of lesser concern/lesser risk of infrastructural damage. All currently proposed installation sites are characterized by being less than or equal to five (5) meters in width, and accessible by foot from Wanuskewin-s Nature Trails.
