The proliferation of HPL in the manufacturing sector was driven mainly with the advent of fibre-based laser technologies capable of multiple kilowatts of laser power. These systems have demonstrated robustness, efficiency and reliability in a compact form factor making a transition to military applications finally achievable. HPL are currently being considered for defence applications such as ordnance disposal and defeating unmanned aerial systems. However, while the damage thresholds for common metals are well documented, the information for plastics and composites is scarce or incomplete.Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is interested in doing a systematic study, selecting conditions realistically achievable at a long distance, to determine the damage threshold and optimal exposition conditions.
