Summary Details:
Advances in remote sensing technology, geostatistical programming, machine learning and open-source data sharing over the past decade, such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), randomForest (rF), R, and GITHUB, offer the opportunity to develop innovative mapping methods to improve the accuracy and precision of Predictive Ecosystem Mapping (PEM). Increasing pressures on BC landscapes demand better ecosystem inventories. The improved ecosystem inventory that new PEM can provide will be used across business areas, including for climate adaptation, forest regeneration planning, productivity estimates, carbon sequestration planning, strategic, tactical and operational planning, and wildlife habitat conservation and management, among other applications. Innovative methodologies for PEM and secondary applications have been in development for four years under the PEM Methods Team project: 'Advancing Predictive Ecosystem Mapping Methods for Multiple Scale Ecological Interpretation of Climate Futures in
British Columbia - A FOR, LWRS, UNBC, UBC, TRU, and Dalhousie U Collaboration'. This year, new PEM field sampling protocols will be implemented at a broad scale in the South Area (Kootenay Lake [southern portion] and Rocky Mountain Natural Resource Districts) and collected data will be used for PEM model training.
