Project Description : Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a meter reading technology which reads meters through a smart over-the-air collection network. EPCOR has an established AMI network to obtain meter readings for power meters throughout the City of Edmonton. Meter readings are collected automatically and subsequently used for billing purposes.EPCOR has about 300,000 water meters in Edmonton. Residential meters are typically located in the customer-s basement while commercial meters are located in the boiler room or utility room on site. Water meters can freeze and burst and need to be located in a heated facility. These meters are currently read manually by walking or driving through neighborhoods. Water AMI Implementation:EPCOR is currently working to optimize meter reading collection through AMI.EPCOR is considering implementing a program that will require the installation of a Landis + Gyr AMI device on all water meters. These devices will communicate with the existing EPCOR power meters and network to collect meter readings for billing purposes. The Landis + Gyr AMI device is a small device that sits on top of existing water meters and communicates the water meter readings to EPCOR-s AMI network, which collects the readings and uses them for billing purposes.
