Description:
The Oldman River Dam (ORD) is an Extreme Consequence Dam according to the consequence category rating of Canadian Dam Association (CDA, 2013) in southern Alberta near Pincher Creek. It impounds water for a secured water supply for irrigation and many municipalities, domestic and industrial users. The ORD also provides, environmental benefits, recreational opportunities and some flood attenuation.The Water Infrastructure & Operations Branch (WIOB) has several types of instruments at the Oldman River Dam for monitoring the integrity of the dam components. These instruments are used to monitor the dam and other structure and their foundation stability to assess the possibility and risk of the failure of the dam and its component structures. The current instrumentation system is old and is no longer supported by the manufacturer and does not meet the recommended minimums for recording interval or data acquisition, storage, retrieval and analysis. The location of each station is also difficult to access in varying weather conditions due to the steep slope and rocky terrain, which is a risk to employee safety at certain periods of the year.The movement must be measured by reliable sensitive instrumentation. The inclinometers are instrumental to monitor movement in the deep seated ground strata.
