In February 2025, the Ministry of Forests acquired an approximately 7-acre lot located at 450 Richmond Loop in Burns Lake, British Columbia, with the intent to develop a new BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) fire base for the Nadina Fire Zone. This initiative addresses long-standing infrastructure limitations at the current facility located at 8 - 4th Avenue, which was originally constructed in the 1960s and is no longer adequate in size, layout, or condition to support modern wildfire operations. The existing site lacks sufficient office space, crew accommodations, and operational support areas. It cannot be expanded to meet projected staffing needs or accommodate consolidated functions such as warehousing, washroom/shower facilities, and GBA+ changerooms. As a result, wildfire assets are stored off-site and staff are dispersed across multiple buildings, reducing operational efficiency and increasing response times during critical periods. To address these challenges, the Ministry will develop the new site through a phased approach, beginning with a comprehensive site assessment and conceptual planning. This first phase will confirm the viability of constructing new infrastructure at 450 Richmond Loop and will build upon relevant findings from a 2021 feasibility study conducted for a nearby parcel at 500 Richmond Loop.
