IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF PINE KILLED BY MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE

Description : The Province requires Services related to the identification and quantification of pine killed cumulatively by mountain pine beetle (MPB) using semi-automated image classification or feature extraction of digital imagery. This MPB-killed pine inventory information will enable well-informed resource management decisions and policy. This work is necessary within the portion of the province where annual aerial pine mortality surveys have not been consistently performed. There are approximately 54 townships in which the MPB killed pine identification and quantification must be conducted. Within these townships there are approximately 215,989 hectares of polygons to be classified and inventoried for pine killed by MPB. The classification area is a collection of stand-sized polygons identified by Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) as containing at least 10% lodgepole pine that are 10 meters or greater tall.
