Description : The department-s research involves the rates of cyanobacterial growth under different aqueous conditions and how much O2 can be generated. The microsensors are needed to measure O2 production within the It is critical to operate several microsensors concurrently to not only measure the O2 with depth into the sediment, but as well the pH, H2S, N2O, NO, H2, and redox to see how the conditions change dynamically over a set period. The microsensors are used to measure the changing geochemical properties moving down into the sediment. It is then tied to looking at the animal distribution within those sediments to get an idea of O2 thresholds that certain animals need to survive. This has implications for early Earth and the evolution of animals in marine sediment. Microsensors are the only unique and practical tool for getting instantaneous and in situ measurements of various gasses in aqueous solutions, sediments, soils, and microbial mats or biofilms, which are only a few hundred microns thick or other environments with heterogeneities at such small scales. Emical profiles can be generated without disturbing the organisms or environments which are being measured.
