Description : Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is the largest medical facility located in Vancouver, British Columbia that was originally constructed in 1906. The steam is supplied to the VGH complex from the Energy Centre (central boiler plant) built in 1999, which is adjacent to the parkade on 12th Avenue. VGH continuously focused on modernizing thermal energy systems from steam to hydronic heating, but the prime heating source for campus is still steam. The steam is mainly used for building heating, sterilizing medical equipment, generating domestic hot water, and operating absorption chillers, kitchen equipment, and therapy pools. This project is undertaken in order to realize the replacement of an existing campus steam manhole which is showing signs of structural failure and the replacement of existing steam/condensate pipes, pipe supports and accessories. In addition, many of the existing steam manholes are missing proper ventilation/drainage systems to meet current WorkSafeBC OHS guidelines and local building code. Vancouver Coastal Health's Facilities Maintenance and Operations (FMO) team also sees the value to replace some of existing steam supply and condensate return pipes where the existing interconnection lines...
