Description : Background and Purpose McMaster University and the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM) has a requirement for a rapid laser ablation unit for their existing Zeiss Crossbeam 350 dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB) scanning electron microscope (SEM). Dual-beam FIB-SEM instruments are in constant demand at the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM) at McMaster University, due to their growing role in advanced materials analysis and sample preparation for both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT). The addition of an attached rapid laser ablation unit to the Zeiss Crossbeam 350 instrument at CCEM further enhances these capabilities by providing a rapid material removal system, which can quickly and efficiently remove material to speed up workflows or expose deeply buried regions of interest. Furthermore, this system opens the possibility for correlative analysis workflows by bridging from larger-scale non-destructive testing (e.g. x-ray micro-CT analysis) down to nanoscale TEM or APT analysis.
