Description : Background and Purpose McMaster University and the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM) have a requirement for a set of equipment dedicated to cryogenic sample processing in a dual-beam focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM). Such an equipment set is chiefly comprised of a liquid nitrogen cooled sample loading station, apparatus for sample transfer under cryogenic vacuum conditions from the loading station to the FIB-SEM, a high vacuum cryogenic sputter coating system, an interlock system which can be mounted on the FIB-SEM, and a stage for the FIB-SEM that maintains the sample under cryogenic cooling while allowing for processing in that instrument. Cryogenic sample processing in a FIB-SEM is required for many different types of materials systems. By maintaining a cryogenic temperature, otherwise soft of even liquid materials may be processed using established methods for FIB-SEM instruments, which would otherwise not be possible. Cryogenic temperature also slows down many reactions and transformations in a material, which can therefore inhibit damage and other unwanted effects caused by interaction of the sample with the ion or electron beams.
