- McMaster University invites qualified bidders to submit responses for the supply of one (1) CRYOGEN-FREE HELIUM-3 REFRIGERATOR in accordance with the terms of this Request for Proposals. McMaster University requires a cryogen-free helium-3 refrigerator to perform neutron scattering experiments on novel quantum materials at temperatures below 1 K. This equipment will be used to carry out single crystal and powder neutron diffraction measurements at the Canadian Neutron Beam Laboratory, based at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. This equipment is required as part of the CFI Innovation Fund project “Building a Future for Canadian Neutron Scattering” awarded in 2020. Bidders must quote the entire bid. Partial bids will not be accepted. Proposals should include a complete cryogenic system capable of reaching 300 mK. The system should include a cryogen-free host cryostat and a top loading helium-3 insert. Rotation of this insert should be possible with a stepper motor controlled rotary stage. With minimum heat load, the hold time for the insert should be at least two days at base temperature. The sample space for the insert should be at least 60 mm in diameter and 150 mm in length. This system must be suitable for neutron scattering applications. The cryostat should have a thin aluminum tail section to minimize interaction with neutrons.
