Description:
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has a requirement for the provision of services to preform a Bed Mapping Exercise. SHA has engaged Analysis Works Inc. in 2015 and 2019 to perform a “Bed Mapping” exercise to help better align bed maps to the patient populations accessing acute beds at both Regina and Saskatoon Hospitals. This work resulted in realignment of Medicine and Surgery units, as well as an efficiency analysis in support of quality improvement projects to reduce length of stay and unnecessary admissions for each clinical program. The outputs from this work formed the basis of a “Bed Needs” analysis to estimate future demand for acute care given current state, efficiency opportunities, and expected population growth and aging. This analysis helped both Tertiary Sites to better understand its patient demographics and provided the basis for Master Planning and funding initiatives related to acute care. These projects involved extensive engagement with representation from all Clinical Program dyads, including Emergency and Critical Care to ensure buy in from both administration and physician leadership.
