Description : General As part of the Alberta 2016 Wildfire Recovery Operations, the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) has recently launched a project in partnership with the Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) located in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB). The one-year project has as its primary objectives to: Strengthen and build capacity within ATC to champion and support communities to adopt a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) approach to managing disasters; Strengthen institutional and community Emergency Response (ER) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) capacities; and Strengthen individual and community resilience to prevent and reduce impacts from emergency disasters.* The CRC recognizes that great strength exists within the ATC and its communities, and through this project, the CRC will help facilitate the community-driven enhancement of these strengths. Background and Context Since the 2016 Alberta Wildfires, the CRC has been working alongside the ATC as a wanted helper, supporting the ATC-led processes of self-determination and governance related to ER and DRM.
