Purchaser Background: Since its founding in 1976, Hiatus House in Windsor, Ontario has been committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence throughout Windsor-Essex county. We provide crisis telephone support and emergency shelter for women and their families in Windsor and area who are fleeing violence and abuse. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing help and hope for families faced with domestic violence. We also provide education and skills training to women, men, and children through counseling and group services. Our team is committed to helping women, children, and men live violence-free lives. Hiatus House is funded in large part by the government of Ontario, and through grants and donations from individuals and organizations. Project background: Hiatus House purchased land adjacent to their current shelter in 2009 with the vision of building a transitional home for their “graduates” of their shelter program. Due to the lack of housing in our county in recent years, the need for transitional housing for women and children in perilous situations has become exponentially more vital. In 2022 Hiatus House took the first step and retained Haerko Inc. as the development consultant as they recognized the need to have an experienced firm lead them through this development journey. Hiatus House then took the next step to remediate the site and ready the site for construction. Then in July 2024 Workshop Architecture Inc. was retained as the prime consultant for this project. Recently Hiatus House has decisioned to procure the general contractor as they also secure project funding. Furthermore, Hiatus House has decided to use a CCDC 5B contract to leverage the experience of the awarded contractor to help achieve the project goals particularly as it related to cost effectiveness of this project.
