- The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has commenced the Request for Proposals (RFP) stage for Blackstart services when the electricity grid has experienced a blackout. Blackstart services are used to re-energize the transmission system and provide start-up power to generators who cannot self-start. Generators that provide Blackstart services in specific areas of the province must be able to restart their generation facility with no outside source of power. The RFP stage of the competition to procure Blackstart services opened on January 20, 2025. The competition will be managed through a procurement site called Bonfire (Bonfire Site). To obtain access to the Bonfire Site, view the RFP documents, and participate in the RFP process, one representative from each interested party will need to register and execute a Bonfire Site Access and Participant Agreement. All matters relating to the RFP, including communication with the AESO and providing a proposal, are governed by the terms of the RFP provisions. Interested parties CANNOT participate in the Blackstart services procurement competition through Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC).
