- OverviewBurlington Fire requires advanced cleaning, inspection, testing, and repair of firefighting protective ensembles (PPE). All services shall be performed in accordance with the latest edition of NFPA 1851 - Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting.
Repairs shall be completed using materials compliant with NFPA 1971 - Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, and in accordance with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications and limitations.
NFPA 1851 establishes minimum requirements for the care and maintenance of firefighting protective ensembles to reduce health and safety risks associated with contamination, damage, or improper maintenance.
NFPA 1851 recommends bi-annual Advanced Cleaning of all issued bunker gear by a UL Verified Independent Service Provider (ISP).
Burlington Fire requires bi-annual advanced cleaning, inspection, testing, and repair of approximately 500 sets of structural firefighting ensembles.
BackgroundBurlington Fire is committed to the health and safety of its personnel. All members in the Suppression, Training, and Prevention Divisions are issued two (2) sets of structural firefighting ensembles to provide protection from thermal, physical, environmental, and bloodborne pathogen hazards encountered during and after firefighting operations.
ObjectivesThe objective of the advanced cleaning, inspection, testing, and repair program is to ensure all PPE continues to meet applicable NFPA standards, manufacturer guidance, and serviceability requirements, while reducing occupational exposure risks related to contamination, degradation, or damage.
